Parrots Over Puerto RicoSusan Roth’s newest adventure in cut paper collage took her to Puerto Rico with collaborator Cindy Trumbore (with whom she also write The Mangrove Tree: Planting Trees to Feed Families). Now author and illustrator have joined to tell the story of Puerto Rico and the recovery of its native parrot in Parrots Over Puerto Rico (October 2013, Lee and Low).

Parrots over Puerto Rico has already received three starred reviews from Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, Horn Book and School Library Journal. Roth’s artwork has been chosen for the Society of Illustrators Original Art 2013 exhibition. Parrots has been chosen by Booklist for its Youth Editors Choice 2013. It is also a Junior Library Guild selection. More here.

Puerto Rican parrots, once abundant, came perilously close to extinction in the 1960s after centuries of foreign exploration , habitat destruction and development.  Roth and Trumbore recount the efforts of scientists to save the parrots. The unusual book – with no text on its cover - also includes a brief history of Puerto Rico itself.

  • “Every paper-and-fabric collage is frame-worthy, from depictions of waterfalls and rain forest to sailing ships, hazards and, of course, parrots. From the commanding cover illustration to the playful image on the back, simply spectacular.” Kirkus Reviews

  • “The book itself is oriented vertically, calendar-style, amplifying its sense of height and allowing for dramatic paper and fabric collages that show the vivid blue-and-green parrots soaring over the island. In an especially lovely scene, a towering waterfall of crinkled strips of white paper cascades over a fibrous backdrop of rocks in Puerto Rico’s El Yunque rainforest. An extensive afterword describes the species’ recovery and includes more than a dozen photographs. A thoughtful and thorough examination of the ways human action can both help and harm animal populations.” Publishers Weekly
