Parrots Over Puerto Rico wins Sibert AwardSibert Medal Susan L. Roth’s Parrots over Puerto, written with Cindy Trumbore, won the 2014 Robert F. Sibert Award for the most distinguished informational book. Parrots had already received five starred reviews and appeared in the Society of Illustrators Original Art exhibition.  Published by Lee and Low, it has garnered a long list of awards.

At the Sibert Award ceremony at the American Library Association Conference in Las Vegas on June 30, Susan informed the audience that:

  • It takes about 24 days to make a real parrot, from egg to chick.
  • It takes about 24 minutes to make a parrot out of paper. It doesn’t matter how big or small it is. I even tried to mass-produce them. Mass-production doesn’t work. I lost a lot of little green feathers that way.
