Laura Gehl

When I visit schools, the #1 question students ask is, “Where do you get your ideas?”  Although I have games I play with kids to help them generate their own story concepts, coming up with ideas is never a problem for me.  Every day, ideas for stories pop into my head.  I jot them down on post-it notes, which I keep in my purse, in my kitchen, and by my bed, among other places.  Sometimes scribbling down an idea in the middle of the night leads to me staring at a crumpled post-it the next morning and thinking…Happy pants?  What on earth did I mean by ‘happy pants’?

Even though thinking of ideas is easy for me, just about every other part of writing is hard.  In my school visits with older kids, I often talk about these struggles.

Yes, writing for children is tough and frustrating much of the time…but I love it so much!  I can’t imagine a better job.
