I love demonstrating to students how I research, write and illustrate my nonfiction picture books. I do so via props and a PowerPoint format. Students learn every step of my bookmaking process, including the importance of meticulous research and draft revision; how to add sparkle to their writing with strong verbs, vivid adjectives and synonyms, and rich alliteration; how my illustrations evolve; and amazing facts about flora and fauna, the theme of my books. I encourage them to create books of their own!
My interactive program is tailored to the occasion and audience. It fully supports the Common Core and STEAM curricula, seamlessly integrating language arts, visual arts, science and geography. Here is what the teachers say:
"Her presentation was as inspirational as it was informative."
"A marvelous guest author/illustrator for any elementary school group of children."
"Her freshness of approach, honesty and enthusiasm enchanted the children."
“She provided a wonderful learning experience on how a children's book is created."
"Weeks later, teachers were still talking about her outstanding program." Louise Simone, The Sheridan School, Washington, DC
Beyond Books: What I Have Learned About Licensing ArtworkI have licensed my book illustrations for use in 10 commercial products including puzzles, notecards and wall calendars. In this “nuts and bolts” session, I provide an overview of product categories for licensing, from greeting cards to bedding; resources for identifying prospective licensing companies; and tips on how artists can pitch their work to them. Attendees receive a handout on how to create an effective promotional piece for potential licensees.
