Ann BausumThe Children’s Book Guild of Washington, DC has selected Ann Bausum for its 2017 Nonfiction Award. Rather than focusing on a single title, the award is presented to an author for a body of work that has “contributed significantly to the quality of nonfiction for children.”

The daughter of a history professor, Bausum engages young readers in a range of topics from First Ladies to Freedom Riders. She highlights overlooked figures and stories from history. Her book on Sergeant Stubby, a heroic dog from World War I, caused Booklist to rave, "Is the appeal of this book greater for dog lovers or military-history buffs? It's a toss-up, because the book's charm simply radiates off the page in all directions. . . . This very engaging book serves as a tribute to canine courage and devotion.” Her book Stonewall: Breaking Out in the Fight for Gay Rights recounts stories from the riots with vivid detail, from the unexpected alliance between gay rights activists and the Mafia, to a Broadway-style kick line of young men, protesting the use of police force.

Her books also encourage readers to look at larger questions that have relevance today. In Unraveling Freedom: The Battle for Democracy on the Home Front During World War I (National Geographic/2010), Bausum asks where Americans draw the line for justice during times of war. Denied, Detained, Deported: Stories from the Dark Side of American Immigration (National Geographic/2009) illuminates the forces that shaped immigration policies in the past.

March Against FearHer forthcoming book, The March Against Fear: The Last Great Walk of the Civil Rights Movement and the Emergence of Black Power (National Geographic/2017), recounts one of the most influential, but nearly forgotten, demonstrations in the civil rights movement.

The event honoring Bausum will take place on Saturday April 29 at Clyde’s Restaurant of Gallery Place, 707 7th Street NW, Washington DC. It will include lunch and a presentation by the author followed by a book sale and signing.
